Pass PSM I Without a Course
Direct answer: You do not need a paid course to pass PSM I. Scrum.org does not require mandatory training. Many candidates pass with the 2020 Scrum Guide, free practice, and timed mocks—if they study precise Guide language instead of workplace “Scrum-ish” habits.
A course can still help some people. It is optional value, not a gate.
What Scrum.org actually requires
- No required class before PSM I
- Assessment: 80 questions, 60 minutes, 85% pass (68/80)
- Typical fee: about $200 USD per attempt (confirm on Scrum.org)
- No prerequisite certification
See the PSM I certification guide and exam cost page.
Self-study path that works without a course
- Read the Guide like a contract. Use the Scrum Guide map. Highlight accountabilities, events, artifacts, and commitments.
- Baseline with the official free Open Assessment on Scrum.org.
- Practice adaptively every day with the free Pretty Scrum practice test (no signup required). Short sessions beat random marathon quizzes.
- Fix the source of each miss—open the Guide idea, not only the answer key.
- Run timed mocks (80 questions / 60 minutes) until you repeatedly clear a safe buffer above 85%.
- Book only when ready—readiness, not a fixed calendar day. Crash option: 1-week plan.
When a course is still worth it
| Situation | Course may help | Self-study is usually enough |
|---|---|---|
| You want live Q&A and peers | Yes | If you self-correct well from text |
| You need external accountability | Yes | If you keep a daily practice streak |
| You only want the cert with minimal cash | Optional | Yes — free stack first |
| You already know workplace Scrum variants | Maybe (to unlearn habits) | Yes if you drill Guide traps deliberately |
Self-study failure modes
- Memorizing terms without scenario practice
- Using only Scrum.org Open and calling it ready
- Trusting company process over the Guide
- Booking after one lucky mock near 85%
- Collecting five conflicting question banks
Difficulty context: Is PSM I hard?
