Product Backlog vs Sprint Backlog vs Increment – Clear Differences
One of the most common areas of confusion for people preparing for the PSM I exam is understanding the differences between the three Scrum Artifacts: the Product Backlog, Sprint Backlog, and Increment.
While they are all related, each artifact has a distinct purpose, owner, and time horizon.
Quick Comparison Table
| Artifact | Owner | Time Horizon | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product Backlog | Product Owner | Long-term (product level) | Ordered list of everything that might be needed in the product |
| Sprint Backlog | Developers | Short-term (one Sprint) | Work selected for the current Sprint + plan to achieve the Sprint Goal |
| Increment | Scrum Team | End of each Sprint | Usable product increment that meets the Definition of Done |
Detailed Breakdown
Product Backlog
The Product Backlog is the single source of work for the Scrum Team. It contains all features, fixes, and improvements needed for the product. The Product Owner is responsible for ordering it based on value, risk, dependencies, and other factors.
Sprint Backlog
The Sprint Backlog is created during Sprint Planning. It includes the items the Developers believe they can complete during the Sprint, along with a plan for how to deliver the Sprint Goal. Only the Developers can change the Sprint Backlog during the Sprint.
Increment
The Increment is the sum of all completed Product Backlog items from the current Sprint plus all previous Sprints. It must be usable and meet the Definition of Done. The Increment is the only artifact that is potentially releasable.
Why This Matters for the PSM I Exam
The PSM I exam frequently tests your understanding of who owns each artifact and what their purpose is. Questions often ask about the differences in time horizon, ownership, and how these artifacts support transparency and empiricism.
Understanding these distinctions helps you answer both direct and scenario-based questions more accurately.
